During an unforgettable ocean adventure in False Bay, visitors can observe a diverse array of marine wildlife, including seals, dolphins, and whales, making it an exceptional destination for nature enthusiasts.
Sting Rays
Occasionally we have been graced by Short-tailed Stingrays. We love these weird-looking creatures. They are the largest stingrays in the world and can reach upwards of 2.1m across and 350kg in weight.
Penguins
Did you know that you can see African Penguins on Seal Island? There are not a lot of penguins found on the island. Their numbers vary, but we roughly see around 50-80 penguins. They are very cute and happily live with the Cape Fur Seals.
Whale Watching
Whales are often seen on our trips in False Bay. We see Brydes whales, Southern Right whales and Humpback whales. We have also spotted Orca’s on our trips, especially the infamous shark eating “Port” and “Starboard”.
Cape Fur Seals
Seal Island is heaving with Cape Fur seals. Depending on breeding season, the rock can boast anything from about 40 00-70 00 seals. They are large muscular seals, extremely noisy animals and bleat like lambs.
Common Dolphins
These beautiful sleek dolphins can be found in their hundreds in False Bay. We see them on many of our shark trips.

When is the best time to see seals in False Bay?
When is the best time of year to go on an ocean safari?
The best time for whale watching is from June to November when Southern Right and Humpback whales migrate to the area. Dolphins and seals can be seen year-round, while shark activity is highest in winter and spring.
What types of whales can be spotted in False Bay?
False Bay, is a prime spot for whale watching, particularly during the winter and spring months. Several whale species can be spotted in the bay, offering visitors a unique opportunity to observe these magnificent marine creatures in their natural habitat.
Southern Right Whales are the most commonly seen species in False Bay. They migrate from the icy waters of Antarctica to the warmer South African coast between June and November to breed and give birth. Known for their slow, graceful movements and distinctive V-shaped blow, Southern Right Whales often come close to shore, providing excellent viewing opportunities. They are also famous for their acrobatic displays, frequently breaching and slapping their tails on the water.
Another species commonly spotted in False Bay is the Humpback Whale. These whales are known for their spectacular breaching behavior and long pectoral fins. Humpbacks migrate through the area on their way to breeding grounds further north, and although they are not as commonly seen as Southern Rights, they make occasional appearances during the migration season.
Bryde’s Whales are resident in False Bay year-round, making them a rare but exciting sighting. Unlike migratory whales, Bryde’s Whales stay in South African waters to feed on schooling fish. They are usually more elusive and harder to spot, but sightings can occur, especially if there is a feeding frenzy happening in the bay.
Occasionally, visitors may also spot Orcas (Killer Whales). Though rare, these apex predators sometimes pass through the bay in pursuit of prey like seals and dolphins.
The variety of whale species makes False Bay a must-visit location for marine enthusiasts and whale watchers looking for an unforgettable experience.
