Where Can You Find Great White Sharks?

The Great White Shark is one of the most widely distributed of all sharks and you can find Great White Sharks in almost every region of the globe from cold seas to the tropics, and from coastal to oceanic seas. You mainly find Great White Sharks between the latitudes of 60° North and 60° South, in waters ranging in temperature between 14° C and 24° C.

Research has shown that Great White Sharks do not remain long in any particular place, and instead will only stay in a certain region for a few weeks on end. Great White Sharks are also capable of extensive open ocean voyages, covering vast distances around the globe.

Generally the Great White Shark is considered rare in most places it occurs, but there are a handful of places around the globe where the Great White Shark is more abundant. The highest concentrations of Great White Sharks are found in temperate seas, especially in areas where there are seal islands and offshore banks rich in fish resources.

Geographically, the best places to see the Great White Sharks are in South Africa, southern Australia, California and Isla Guadalupe off Mexico.

In South Africa, most of the Great White Shark cage diving “hot spots” lies off the Western Cape. These “hot spots” include Seal Island in Mossel Bay, Dyer Island and Geyser Rock near Gansbaai, and the infamous Seal Island in False Bay, which is home to the “flying” Great White Sharks. Seal Island in False Bay is considered the best place on the Earth to witness the natural predatory events of the Great White Shark, and on many of our shark cage diving trips you will get to witness the spectacular breaching behaviour of the Great White Shark.

Join us on one of our “Airjaws” breaching and shark cage diving trips and witness first-hand the spectacular aerial acrobatics of the “Flying Great White Sharks of False Bay”.
