Let’s Talk About It, The Great White Shark

Three little words that strike fear into the most intrepid adventurer, the strongest man and the biggest adrenaline junkie. Three little words that make life time surfers perspire in their wetsuits while on their boards, and take the breath of experienced divers away! Three little words that have mother’s holding a little tighter to their children and father’s swearing to protect to their last breath. Three little words that have caused the death of hundreds of thousands and screwed with our eco-systems! And those three little words: Great White Shark! Great White Sharks didn’t get to be so very terrifying [...]

The Shark Eye…..eye eye Captain

In keeping with the theme of senses, today we’ll take a look at the shark’s eye. A shark’s eye is as advanced as its hunting technique. It consists of two duplex retinas: cones and rods. Cones enable you to see in the colour whereas rods help the eye to adjust to light and dark by dilating and contracting the pupils to allow more or less light in. This allows the shark to see up to 15 meters long. The shark’s eye is made up of the normal elements like a human’s eyes such as the cornea, lens, retina, pupil and [...]

Up Close and Almost Too Personal with the Great White Sharks of False Bay

Up Close and Almost Too Personal with the Great White Sharks of False Bay with African Shark Eco Charters By Paul Danckwerts How do you write about a great white shark, it’s immense never ending silvery flanks catching the light as it scythes through the bubbly gloom six inches in front of your face? With difficulty. Just to see one of these behemoths is a privilege and an emotional one at that for anybody who knows anything about these misunderstood monsters of the deep. The Blue Pointer 2, a 36-foot vessel that sports two 300hp engines on the aft, [...]

Shark Cage Diving in Simons Town, Cape Town

Today I thought I would keep to the topic of sharks of course, but taking it from a different angle, that of the operators who offer dives out of Simon’s Town, Western Cape. There are a couple of things to remember when embarking on the exciting shark cage dive, but the most important being that these are wild animals, not trained to perform and appear at our behest, but rather they grace us with their presence and we are blessed to be able to see them in their natural environment. 20+Years ago, Rob Lawrence affectionately known as the Shark Legend, [...]

Trip Happenings

Trip Happenings with African Shark Eco-Charters August 17th So after three bad weather days in a row with very strong winds, we at African Shark Eco-Charters are contemplating what we may find when we go back to the island. Will the weather have encouraged new sharks into the bay, or fooled our current sharks into thinking it’s the end of the season? It’s obvious what we are all hoping for, but this late in August either is possible. The trips before the strong winds were very up and down, as has been the norm for this season – impossible to [...]

Don’t Get Mouthy…

Don't get mouthy When you hear the words “Megamouth Shark”, what is the image it conjures? If you think big, nay huge mouth, well then you would be correct. It stands to reason, if it has a huge mouth, it has to have a rather large frame to fit it into, and again you would be correct. This is one of the largest shark species, being out grown only by the likes of Whale Sharks and the controversial Megalodon Sharks. Despite its massive size and mouth, this shark sports very small teeth, as it is a filter feeder, swimming [...]

Let’s Talk About Wobbegong Sharks…

A wabba, wabba, what you say? You heard me, it’s a Wabbegong Shark! You would be forgiven for thinking it was a part of the seabed, an ocean floor carpet, if you will, so much so, this is another name for this interesting little fella’.   The Wobbegong Shark is a bottom dweller, covering the oceans beds like rugs, hence the name “Carpet Shark”. There are 12 different species of Carpet Shark, and they all prefer shallow, temperate waters, but one, the Japanese Wobbegong, which is found in the far Northern oceans of Japan.   Most Wobbegong Sharks grow to [...]

Talking About Sharks…

I said before that I wanted to venture into the world of sharks with you, one at a time, learning about their individual characteristics and make up, and thought I would start with an overview of some of the more “outstanding” of the 510 species of shark. I spoke of the Lemon Shark in my previous blog, and also admitted that this is one of my favourite sharks, but there are a whole lot of others that will inspire awe and amazement at their sheer abilities and odd looks! Possibly one of the most vicious looking of all sharks is [...]

Fantastic Experience with African Shark Eco-Charters

“A fantastic experience!” Reviewed 29 April 2015 We had a great time with the Eco-Charters team. We were fortunate enough to have a good shark day at the beginning of April. We the the last of the charter boats to arrive at Seal Island - the others were already anchored and had some shark activity so our captain decided to try and get a breaching attack - not usual for this time of year - and we were successful - not a full "airjaws" experience, but a great visual of the shark breaking the water to attack the decoy! The [...]
